Wake up and 'Know Thyself'

Personal Development

by Audrey Davies

Have you ever analysed what strengths you bring to the team effort – and what you’re not so hot at? I’m a great believer in the `Team Roles’ (Belbin Associates®) concept, developed by Dr Meredith Belbin, and use it myself to consider whether new members of the team will `fit’.

In the 1970s, Dr Belbin and his research team at Henley Management College wanted to discover if – and how – problems could be pre-empted and avoided. Over a period of nine years, international management teams were studied. Participants completed psychometric tests, so that attributes such as personality and behaviour could be brought into play and their effects on the team could be accurately considered.

The research revealed that the difference between success and failure for a team was not dependent on factors such as intellect, but more on behaviour.

So, if you want to know what behaviour you `bring to the team party’, we can provide your online Belbin Team Role report and help you analyse what it means.
